Thiamin

Thiamin (vitamin B1) plays an important role in many metabolic processes, turning the foods we eat into usable sources of energy for the body. Thiamin works together with the other B vitamins and helps to increase energy levels, improve mental attitude, and improve carbohydrate digestion (and tolerance). This vitamin has also been shown to lower blood pressure, promote healthy weight loss, and improve quality of sleep.

Deficiencies in thiamin are rare because many foods we eat and supplements consumed are fortified with this vitamin. However when deficiencies do occur it may be associated with general muscle weakness, reduced mental ability, loss of appetite, nausea, indigestion, irritability, and depression.

Thiamin & Weight Loss

Thiamin is an ingredient for many weight loss supplants because of the increased energy levels and improved mental attitude it promotes. Thiamin may also help to relieve the effects of stress thereby minimizing the production of cortisol, a hormone believed to be responsible for weight gain related to stress. In fact stress increases the need for thiamin and all the other B vitamins.

Is Thiamin Safe?

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for thiamin is 1.5mg. This represents the minimum daily dose needed by an average healthy person to avoid showing signs of deficiency. Excess doses of thiamin present little risk because this is a water soluble vitamin. Any thiamin consumed in excess of the body's requirements will simply be excreted in the urine, although longterm supplementation of 3g or more daily have been shown to cause toxicity.
