L-Tyrosine
Tyrosine or l-tyrosine as it's called in supplement form is a non-essential amino acid which is a precursor for several important neurotransmitters such as dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Such neurotransmitters are important for controlling mood, depression, cognitive performance, concentration, and stress. In fact l-tyrosine is so effective at treating depression it's often a better treatment than many prescription anti-depressant drugs. L-tyrosine has also been associated with offsetting fatigue, heightened alertness, and increasing metabolic rate.
Tyrosine isn't an essential amino acid, as our bodies can naturally synthesize tyrosine on its own given adequate nutrients, particularly the amino acid phenylalanine. Tyrosine can also be found in many foods including meats, wheat products, and seafood. Deficiency of tyrosine is unlikely, however when tyrosine deficiencies do occur it may be associated with depression, low body temperature – particularly cold hands and feet, hypothyroidism, and weight gain.
L-Tyrosine & Weight Loss
Supplementing with l-tyrosine may be an effective way to safely boost the metabolism for over-weight and obese individuals. Tyrosine has been shown to influence the production of thyroid hormone levels, specifically thyroxin, a hormone which regulates the bodies metabolic rate. Tyrosine is also an important amino acid for the production of neurotransmitters dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine; all of which have been shown to successfully suppress appetite.
The daily dosage of l-tyrosine required to prove effective for weight loss is 500 to 2,000mg per day, unfortunately many weight loss diet pills available have nowhere near that amount of tyrosine.
Xenadrine-NRG
for example contains less than 60mg of l-tyrosine per capsule, so a daily dosage of 2 pills per day will at most provide 120mg of l-tyrosine. An alternative is to stack (take in addition with) your favorite diet pill with l-tyrosine, this may also help reduce the energy crash typically experienced with
caffeine
and other stimulant based weight loss supplements.
Is L-Tyrosine Safe?
Tyrosine is a somewhat safe supplement, however the side effects from taking high doses of l-tyrosine include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or nervousness. Doses of 500 to 2,000mg per day are typical for cardiovascular sports athletes and those on weight loss programs.
