Hoodia Gordonii

Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent (cactus like) plant native to southwestern Africa and can be found growing naturally in the Kalahari desert. For centuries this plant has been consumed by the San people of South Africa. The San would regularly consume the plant during times of hardship or while on long hunting missions. Hoodia hordonii would help suppress both their appetites and thirst. There are also reports that hoodia gordnoii provides a state of alertness.

The molecule believed responsible for the appetite suppression effects from hoodia gordonii has been isolated and licensed exclusively to Phytopharm. This molecule, dubbed P57, is currently being researched by Phytopharm for its potential as a weight loss supplement. Only Phytopharm has the exclusive rights to market hoodia gordonii as a weight loss aid, but clearly there are already countless products flooding the market.

Hoodia's alternate names include: Xhoba, Kalahari Xhoba, hoodia gordonii cactus, African Hats, Queen of the Namib

Hoodia Gordonii & Weight Loss

Hoodia Gordonii has only recently been introduced as a potential weight loss supplement. Much of the research in this area is currently underway by Phytopharm. However, the belief is this bitter-tasting succulent may contain a chemical which tricks the brain into thinking it's full. This causes a decrease in appetite and subsequently a loss of body weight when hoodia gordonii is taken for an extended length of time. Early reports suggest that true appetite suppression doesn't fully take effect until the second week, at which time daily calorie intake is reduced by approximately 1000 cal per day.

Is Hoodia Gordonii Safe?

There is little evidence that hoodia gordonii may by harmful, however there is also little evidence that hooida gordonii is 100% safe. From the clinical studies undertaken by Phytopharm nothing indicated that hoodia gordonii wasn't safe but they suggest further testing is needed.

An argument in favor for the safety of hoodia gordonii is to consider that the San people of the Kalahari desert have been consuming this succulent for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. However, I somehow doubt their life expectancy is the same as it is for us in America.
